  • High school academic performance
  • Standardized test scores (SAT or ACT)
  • Athletics and extracurricular activities

  • A congressional letter of recommendation (not required by the Coast Guard Academy)

Basic Tips to get started

1. At the end of your Junior year, tell your counselor you are applying to academies. You will have to make an appointment for your Senior Conference. (preferably end of March/April)

2. Ask your teachers for a letter of recommendation. Applying to academies you will need to request letters from:
  • Junior Math Teacher
  • Junior English Teacher

  • Gym Teacher
  • School Counselor
  • Outside Letter of Recommendation (coach, trainer, mentor, etc.)
  • Remember to give each of your teachers a thank you card to show your appreciation in their help!

  • Colorado Senator Michael Bennett (application opens in April)
  • US Representative Diana DeGette (application opens in April)
